Brownell ‘A Little’ Surprised by Godfrey’s Decision to Transfer

CLEMSON — Several former Clemson men’s basketball players hit the NCAA transfer portal following the 2023-24 campaign, including sixth man RJ Godfrey.

After two seasons with the Tigers, Godfrey put his name in the portal on April 12, and last week, the 6-foot-8 forward announced that he is headed to Georgia — where his father, Randall Godfrey, played before his 11-year career as an NFL linebacker.

RJ played in all 36 games for Clemson as a key reserve this past season and was the team’s leading scorer off the bench. The former three-star prospect from Georgia averaged 6.1 points and 3.4 rebounds per game while shooting nearly 60 percent from the field.

Clemson head coach Brad Brownell met with the media on Wednesday, and when asked about Godfrey, Brownell didn’t care to discuss specific transfer decisions but admitted he was “a little” surprised by Godfrey entering the portal.

“I’m not gonna get into specifics with kids leaving. Just not going to do that,” Brownell said. “All the guys (transfers), there’s different circumstances with everybody. I’m grateful that I had the opportunity to coach him and all the guys. He’s a terrific young man, and wish all our guys the best. But yeah, you’re obviously surprised by some more than others.”

Along with Godfrey, Clemson saw graduate guard Alex Hemenway, graduate forward Jack Clark and redshirt sophomore guard Josh Beadle enter the portal after the 2023-24 season. Hemenway is transferring to Vanderbilt, while Clark is going to VCU and Beadle is headed to Boston College.

Meanwhile, the Tigers signed two transfers ahead of the 2024-25 season – former Boston College guard Jaeden Zackery and former Cincinnati forward Viktor Lakhin.
