Brownell: Clemson Needs Another Piece in Portal

Brad Brownell landed two key pieces in the transfer portal, but the work isn’t done yet.

Clemson’s head coach detailed his excitement about the arrival of transfers Jaeden Zackery and Viktor Lakhin.

Zackery was the playmaker for Boston Colkege last season, averaging 11.3 points and 4.2 rebounds. Lakhin was the starting big at Cincinnati with 9.2 points and 6.0 rebounds per game.

“We’re excited for both those guys. Jaeden and Viktor are going to have immediate impacts on our team. We need to get one more frontcourt guy for sure that can do that but we like both guys,” Brownell said.

With PJ Hall off to the NBA, Brownell’s comment about another front court piece becomes very clear. The loss of RJ Godfrey in the transfer portal also solidified that need.

Two years in a row, the Tigers are getting massive boosts in the portal. Beyond the players Brownell is bringing in, there’s a mentality that these veterans bring to Clemson.

“They bring some toughness and some competitiveness that think this team needs losing PJ and Joe,” Brownell said.

The bar for transfer success was set very high for the Tigers with Joseph Girard III. Zackery and Lakhin will be key pieces during the 2024-25 season with at least one more piece to be added to the puzzle.
