Each year, when the calendar turns to June, Clemson starts handing out offers to rising high school juniors.
Halfway into the month, and less than three dozen have been announced publicly. One of those went to 4-star cornerback Shavar Young Jr. (Webb School, Knoxville, Tn). He is one of just three corners to have announced an offer so far.
While the Tigers were originally looking at Young as a wide receiver, the more he has developed, the more they like him at corner. Defensive coordinator Wes Goodwin and corners coach Mike Reed made a stop at his high school during the evaluation period.
“At first, my relationship was with coach (Tyler) Grisham, when I first started going up there,” Young told The Clemson Insider. “Lately, I’ve been developing a relationship with coach Reed. He’s a real transparent guy. Likes to keep it real.”
The blue-chip talent plays both ways in high school. and as a sophomore he posted 84 receptions for 1,130 yards and nine touchdowns to go along with 17 tackles, 11 pass breakups and an interception on defense.
“I mean, that’s an easy transition,” Young said. “I always play both, and I feel like the two positions go hand in hand.”
Multiple recruiting services rank Young as a Top 150 talent overall, and while he has well over two dozen offers, Georgia, Oregon, Tennessee, Florida and Notre Dame are some of the other schools he said are in the mix.
When comparing Clemson to some of the others, it is the culture that really resonates.
“Just the family and stuff,” Young said. “The family-like feel most definitely.”
Young is planning to announce a commitment on December 12, and says he plans to get back to Clemson for a game in the fall. Until then, he will continue to build relationships, something that will play a key role as he heads towards making a decision.
“Who can develop me the best on and off the field,” Young said. “Who can help me build relationships and become a better ball player.”
