Georgia is a heavy, double-digit favorite heading into the 2024 season opener against Clemson. But are the Bulldogs on upset alert for that game against the Tigers in Atlanta?
Athlon Sports recently highlighted five early season college football games with upset potential, and among those games listed is Clemson vs. UGA.
The ACC-SEC showdown between the Tigers and Dawgs in Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium is set for Saturday, Aug. 31.
Here’s what Athlon’s Scout Springgate had to say about that matchup and the possibility of an upset:
The matchup rekindles the non-conference rivalry between both programs, which have met 65 times before. The most recent meeting ended in a Bulldogs 10-3 victory on Sept. 4, 2021.
With Georgia aiming to reclaim its spot atop the college football world after being excluded from the 2024 College Football Playoff, the Bulldogs can ill-afford to stumble against the Tigers.
While Clemson has taken a step back from its status as an annual title contender in recent years, the Tigers are still one of the ACC’s top programs and have the roster potential to claim a major early season victory.
Look for this matchup to be tightly contested throughout the game.
Clemson will attempt to earn its first win against Georgia since 2013 in a matchup of regional rivals that have accounted for four of the last eight national championships. In the series’ 17 installments since 1980, the winner of this contest went on to win the national championship three times.
The Tigers (9-4, 4-4 ACC in 2023) hope to return to the College Football Playoff for the first time since 2020 following six straight playoff appearances from 2015-20.
As mentioned above, Georgia (13-1, 8-1 SEC in 2023) is looking to get back in the playoff this season and win what would be the program’s third national championship in four years, following back-to-back national titles in 2021 and 2022.
The Aflac Kickoff Game between Clemson and Georgia will kick off at 12 p.m. and be televised on ABC.
The Bulldogs are currently a 13.5-point favorite, per FanDuel Sportsbook.
