CLEMSON — History was made in many ways this past Saturday in Clemson’s big win over Appalachian State.
While the Tigers scored big points, earned huge stats, and were given honors for their performance, many other experiences were gained from the game in big ways.
In the fourth quarter, as App State was on the goal line attempting to score another touchdown, freshman safety Ricardo Jones picked off quarterback Joey Aguilar to earn the first interception of his college career.
“It’s crazy,” Jones said, “when I heard him say my name, ‘Ricardo Jones with the interception.’ It was crazy to hear all the fans there.”
What better place for a freshman to earn such a start to their career than at home in Memorial Stadium, surrounded by fans and family. Jones found much joy, and so did his teammates.
“All of my teammates were running on the field hyping me up, it’s real surreal. Crazy moment,” he said.
A first year out of Warner Robins, Ga., Jones was ranked the ninth best safety in the nation by Prepstar. He earned three interceptions and 33 tackles in five games in 2023. Regardless of his recent successes, his focus is still on his full improvement.
“I’m just in the film room smiling, just happy,” Jones said. “At the same time, I want to look at the plays where I didn’t do so well. I want that good coaching, constructive criticism, I want to get better.”
“Brick by brick. I want to get developed, I know Clemson is the school for that, so whatever coach tells me, whatever they push me to do, I do,” he said.
With 10 regular season games left to be played in his first season, Jones will have plenty of chances to solidify his playing opportunities and grow as a Clemson Tiger, especially when they host NC State on Sept. 21 at Death Valley.
