ESPN released its updated college football power rankings this week, stacking up the top 25 teams in the sport as it stands right now following Week 3 of the season.
Clemson, which is coming off an open date this past weekend, moved up to No. 17 in the latest ESPN power rankings.
The Tigers (1-1) were previously No. 19 in the power rankings following their 66-20 victory over App State on Sept. 7 at Memorial Stadium in Week 2.
Here’s what ESPN had to say regarding Clemson heading into its ACC opener vs. NC State on Saturday at Death Valley (12 p.m., ABC):
“Clemson was off in Week 3, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t an eventful few days for the Tigers. For one, folks around Clemson are still riding high off the Tigers’ Week 2 drubbing of Appalachian State. The 66-20 win was a long-awaited glimpse of the offensive heft Dabo Swinney has promised — but not delivered — for the past few years.
Meanwhile, Clemson’s next game on the slate comes against NC State, a contest that just a few weeks ago seemed like a harbinger of who would win the ACC. Now though? The Wolfpack have struggled badly in all three games and starting QB Grayson McCall could be out with a true freshman getting the nod instead. Given NC State’s struggles on the O-line, the combination of a freshman QB and Clemson’s dynamic defensive front could translate to another emphatic Tigers win and another chance to put the opener against Georgia in the rearview mirror.”
Texas jumped Georgia for the top spot in ESPN’s updated power rankings after Week 3, with the Bulldogs now at No. 2 following a narrow road victory over Kentucky. Alabama, Tennessee and Ohio State round out the rest of the top five, in that order.
Miami remained at No. 6 as the highest-ranked ACC team in ESPN’s power rankings, followed by Clemson and then Louisville (No. 19).
Clemson moved up one spot to No. 21 in the latest AP Top 25 Poll that was released Sunday, while the Tigers also slid up a spot to No. 19 in the latest Coaches Poll.
