CLEMSON — Clemson took down Stanford, 40-14, in what started as quite the defensive affair at Memorial Stadium.
To open up the game, Clemson forced three turnovers on consecutive drives, earning an early fumble followed by two red zone interceptions. One interception was from cornerback Avieon Terrell.
Terrell, a sophomore from Atlanta, Ga., earned his first interception of the year on Stanford’s second drive, where quarterback Ashton Daniels scrambled to the right and threw a ball to a receiver cutting back across the end zone. Terrell was there to meet the ball, pick it off and go down for a touchback.
The defensive back was straightforward when asked about the interception in his appearance to the media after the game.
“We know their quarterback likes to scramble and make throws, so I just stayed on my man and made the play,” Terrell said.
And that he did. Following his interception, the Tigers drove down the field and scored a field goal, their last points of the half besides a late-second quarter touchdown.
“They got into the red zone twice, and we got to turn it over twice, so it helped a lot because they could win at this point,” Terrell said. “It felt good to get that.”
After hosting three-straight home games, No. 17 Clemson heads to Tallahassee, Fla., to face former Clemson quarterback DJ Uiagalelei and the Florida State Seminoles in their first true road game of the season.
“Same thing,” he said. “Just be extraordinary. Just stay focused all week.”
To be extraordinary is certainly a mindset to follow heading into a game against a conference rival who, although FSU lost to SMU on Saturday, they have been a pain of recent for the Tigers. Last year, the Seminoles knocked off the Tigers in Death Valley in overtime.
“We confident, man. Ain’t too much I can say,” Terrell said. “We’re communicating. I think that has helped us a lot, just communicating on the field. We go in and watch film all week, so we know what’s coming.”
