CLEMSON — It has been nearly a year since No. 15 Clemson faced Florida State, and things are much different as they head into Saturday’s primetime matchup in Tallahassee, Fla.
Clemson (3-1, 2-0 ACC) heads south this Saturday to take on the Seminoles at 7 p.m. on ESPN. The stakes are high, as the Tigers are looking for revenge. This time, the teams are much more jumbled up than their previous encounter.
Starting Seminoles quarterback DJ Uiagalelei, who played for the Tigers from 2020-’22, has led his team to a disappointing 1-4 start, a stark difference from the undefeated team it was last year under Jordan Travis. However, Uiagalelei will be sidelined with an injury, allowing backup Brock Glenn took take control of the offense.
On the defensive side, FSU (1-4, 1-3 ACC) is led by Joshua Farmer, Patrick Payton, and Daniel Lyons, all solid players on the defensive line. Additionally, the squad has good players at linebacker and in the secondary, as well.
“I think for us, we don’t prepare for the opponent,” Clemson offensive guard Marcus Tate said. “We have a standard and we’re just trying to meet that every week. What’s important for us as an offensive line and and as a team is just to build consistency, no matter who we’re playing.”
As to Tate’s comment, the Tigers have been consistently strong up front on offense this season. Only allowing one sack through four games, Clemson has protected quarterback Cade Klubnik well, while also allowing running room for himself and the rushers.
“We want to be dominant, but Florida State, regardless of what it is, they have a very talented roster,” Tate said. “You shouldn’t take a team like that lightly ever, especially with the type of guys that they have and what they’re capable of doing.”
The Florida State defense has 16 sacks so far as well as 13 pass deflections and two forced fumbles. While they have the potential to rock an offense, the Tigers are prepared to continue to play hard.
“We’re having a very intense, focused week, trying to make sure that we game plan correctly, that we identify personnel correctly, and that we practice hard so we can dominate once Saturday comes,” Tate said.
