Brock Glenn is set to make his first start of the season for Florida State as the Seminoles will host No. 15 Clemson on Saturday.
Transfer DJ Uiagalelei started the first five games of the season for Mike Norvell’s team, but was pulled after throwing his third interception in a 42-16 loss at SMU last weekend. The third and final pick was returned for a touchdown, with Uiagalelei also suffering a broken finger on his throwing hand during the play.
With Uiagalelei out, the Tigers must now prepare for Glenn. The redshirt freshman started the win over Louisville in the ACC Championship Game, as well as the blowout loss to Georgia in the Orange Bowl last season after Jordan Travis went down with an injury.
While there isn’t a ton of film on Glenn, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney is not expecting the Seminoles to make any major changes to the offense.
“I think they’re gonna do what they do,” Swinney said. “We’ve got two really full games to study him and watch him for sure. But I think you just prepare for what they do.”
Swinney also noted that the Tigers’ defense would be prepared to see some wildcat after Florida State used running back Lawrance Toafili in that role in the conference championship game last year.
“He’s a good runner,” Swinney said. “He can throw the ball. They’re not gonna ask him to do anything different. Only thing I can say is they may do a little bit of Wildcat like you saw in the ACC Championship Game. Maybe that’s a little extra that we prepare for but, they’re going to run their offense. That’s why he’s there.”
Glenn was ranked as a 3-star talent by most of the recruiting services coming out of high school. He was No. 481 overall in the 247 Sports Composite and No. 30 among all quarterbacks.
After he came on in relief of Uiagalelei against SMU, the redshirt freshman was 0-for-4 passing. Last season, in five games (two starts), Glenn completed just 37.3% of his pass attempts (19-of-51) with no touchdowns and two interceptions. He averaged just 3.7 yards per attempt.
However, Swinney insists that there is more to Glenn than the numbers would suggest, and that his team must prepare to face him at his best if they are to come out of Tallahassee with a victory on Saturday.
“They recruited him there to — they, obviously, loved him as a player and they’ve been growing him and developing him and he’s got some experience,” Swinney said. “So, I’m sure they have all the confidence in the world in him.”
