Erik Bakich’s Clemson baseball has begun fall ball and the first subject that was broached was the health of star Cam Cannarella.

The junior centerfielder was injured early on last season, hurting his shoulder sliding into third. He would miss a few games before returning to the lineup but played the rest of the season with a torn labrum.

Cannarella had surgery to repair the shoulder back in July and Bakich expects his All-American centerfielder to be taking swings by the end of fall.

“He’s progressing well,” Bakich said on Wednesday. “He will be hitting towards the end of the fall and throwing right after that.”

Despite the injury, Cannarella still hit .337 last season with 11 home runs and 60 RBI as he helped guide the Tigers to their first appearance in a Super Regional since 2010. He led the team in triples (3) and multi-hit games (29).

While he will not be a full participant this fall, Bakich said he is absolutely on track to be ready to go by the start of the season.

“Right now he is projected to be full-go for the preseason in January,” Bakich said. “It won’t take him long to get ready for the season. As of right now, we are expecting him to be running around out there in centerfield making circus catches game one.”

The Tigers are set to open the season in Dallas on February 14th in the Shriners College Showdown. Clemson will play Oklahoma State that Friday, then will square off with Arizona on Saturday and finish off the weekend with Ole Miss on that Sunday.
