After tearing his Achilles in the second quarter of the Browns 21-14 loss to Cincinnati on Sunday, Deshaun Watson’s season is over.
During his weekly Zoom call on Monday, Dabo Swinney confirmed he has reached out to the former Clemson standout to offer words of encouragement.
“I absolutely reached out to him and just tried to encourage him and lift him up,” Swinney said. “And just just praying for him.”
This is just the latest setback for Watson, who has faced plenty of adversity in recent seasons, on and off the field. Watson played in just six games in his first season with Cleveland after having to serve a suspension and he was limited to just six games last season due to injury.
“I mean, it’s a tough to setback for him,” Swinney added. “I mean, he’s still young. He’s got a lot of football in front of him. We saw Aaron Rodgers playing last night. He’s about 40 coming off of torn Achilles.”
The Browns are off to a dismal 1-6 start with Watson completing 63.4% of his passes for 1,138 yards. he’s thrown just five touchdowns and has three interceptions.
“It’s tough, because he was starting to play pretty good and get back in rhythm,” Swinney said. “Obviously a big setback for him. But you just got to keep going. You can’t and let it keep you down. You just got to bounce back and he will.”
