CLEMSON — An eventful night occurred for Clemson United as it squashed USC Upstate 6-0 Tuesday at Historic Riggs Field.

The Tigers (9-2-2) had six different players record a goal, and five earned assists. Okunlola had a career day, turning in his first goal of the year and assisting on two others.

“I’m more happy with the zero than I am with the six,” Clemson head coach Mike Noonan said. “I’m happy that the guys were able to keep a clean sheet. They scored some good goals, no doubt about it, but I’m more proud of the clean sheet than with the six scores.”

Silence was broken after the first 10 minutes, as Okunlola hit a perfect shot across the goal after dribbling at the near post, scoring the first goal of the match.

The rest of the first half was like a staple theme for Clemson this season — missed opportunities. Ending the first 45 minutes with 12 shots compared to Upstate’s two, the United offense stayed hard on the attack and went into the second half with a one-score lead.

However, it wasn’t a one-score lead for long, as Clemson caught on fire offensively, scoring four goals within the first seven minutes of the second half.

Okulola helped assist the first two goals, scored by forwards James Kelly and Wahabu Musah nearly two minutes apart. Musah tassisted defender Arthur Duquenne on a quick goal minutes later.

The icing on the cake was when United earned a freekick, just over a minute after Duquenne’s score, and Meinhard played off of it to earn its fifth score of the match.

“I just needed this game,” Okunlola said. “And I have confidence moving forward for the game on Friday, so I’m looking forward to it.”

United continue to put the pressure on Upstate, with goalkeeper Joseph Andema earning a save on a potential scoring opportunity and the Clemson offense putting up more shots.

The barrage of offensive broke through again when midfielder Jackson Wrobel in the bottom right of the goal off an assist by Ransford Gyan in the 75th minute. After Wrobel’s score, the Tigers continued to defend well and sealed the victory with a mighty lead.

Clemson will wrap up the week against the Syracuse Orange at 8 p.m., on Friday at Historic Riggs Field.
