Spiller, Grisham Name Two Tigers They’d Want to Take Skills From

The latest episode of Clemson Football’s official podcast, 2 Right Turns, featured C.J. Spiller and Tyler Grisham.

The two former Tiger players and current Clemson assistant coaches touched on plenty of interesting things, including this question from podcast host and Associate AD/Football Communications & Strategic Initiatives Ross Taylor:

If they could take one skill or attribute from one player they’ve coached, at the present time or in the past, what would Spiller and Grisham want for the skillset they had when they were players?

Spiller, who was formally inducted into the Clemson Ring of Honor last Saturday, answered first, saying he’d choose the power of current Clemson senior running back Phil Mafah.

“I mean, for the last two weeks – it started in Florida State when he ran No. 24 (DB K.J. Kirkland) over, and then it went over to Wake Forest when he got (DB Nick Andersen) – and I think if I had just had just that little bit, I think that would have helped me out a little more,” said Spiller, an All-ACC and All-American running back for the Tigers (2006-09) and the 2009 ACC Player of the Year who has been Clemson’s running backs coach since 2021.

“Because everybody just knew me as a speed guy. Like, I was strong, but they really didn’t respect my game as a power guy like James Davis. So, I would love to take the power that Phil has… that would be one thing.”

Grisham then talked about what he’d take for his own game when he was a player, pointing to what Clemson true freshman receiver Bryant Wesco brings to the table.

“I’ll say this, like, Wesco covers so much ground when he runs,” said Grisham, who has served as Clemson’s receivers coach since 2020 after recording more than 130 catches and nearly 1,400 yards as a receiver for the Tigers from 2005-08.

“He just covers so much ground, and the endurance that he has taking like two steps every 7 yards or 8 yards. I mean it’s crazy. That would’ve really helped me. My little legs running around… I could get you 10 yards, man. I could get you a first down, but after one juke, it’s about over for me.”
