CLEMSON – After East Carolina fired head coach Mike Houston a little over a week ago, Garrett Riley’s name was mentioned almost immediately as a possible candidate to fill that opening.
Early in his coaching career, Riley spent three seasons with the Pirates as part of former head coach Ruffin McNeil’s staff. He was a graduate assistant in 2013 and 2014 before being promoted to outside receivers coach for the 2015 season.
With Riley having a previous tie to the school, it’s only natural that his name would be linked to the opening. The Clemson offensive coordinator was asked about the development on Wednesday.
“I know chatter will happen at times,” Riley responded. “But I am where my feet are.”
Riley insists that his sole focus is on preparing for Saturday night’s game against Louisville. So much so that it caused him to be a few minutes late to his press conference.
“I was in a rabbit-hole and that is why I was a couple of minutes late here,” Riley said on Wednesday. “Doing some red-zone and goal line.”
Riley is currently in his second season as the Clemson offensive coordinator. Prior to that he served in the same role at TCU for a year.
