Clemson Cruises to Exhibition Victory Over Augusta

CLEMSON – Four days before the beginning of the season, the Clemson basketball team welcomed the NAIA Augusta Jaguars to Littlejohn Coliseum for an exhibition matchup with the Tigers cruising to an 90-49 win.

Chauncey Wiggins led the way for Clemson, scoring a team-high 18 points. He was 8-of-12 from the floor and 2-of-3 from beyond the arc. Chase Hunter was a perfect 6-of-6 from the field, which included hitting all three of his 3-point attempts to finish with 15. The veteran guard also added three assists.

The Jaguars’ Demitri Gardner led all scorers with 22 points.

The Tigers shot 44% from 3-point land and had 27 points off 20 Augusta turnovers.

Head coach Brad Brownell did a lot of mixing and matching with some of the new pieces Clemson added over the offseason, with transfers Viktor Lakhin and Jaeden Zackery getting starts. Other transfers Christian Reeves and Myles Foster also saw plenty of time, as did Jake Heidbreder, who redshirted last season. True freshman Del Jones and Dallas Thomas were also able to get some minutes, as did redshirt freshman Asa Thomas.

Reeves had a solid second half and finished the game with 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting. He also had eight rebounds and a block in his 10 minutes of action. Foster also had a good night, scoring 10 points, giving the Tigers four players to hit the double-digit mark.

Lakhin finished with 7 points on 3-of-5 shooting with three boards, while playing 16 minutes. A. Thomas pitched in with 8 points, hitting both  of his 3-point attempts.

The Tigers got off to a sluggish start, turning it over four times in the first eight minutes of play and at the 12:12 mark of the first half the score was tied 12-12. Clemson would then go on a 14-2 run, highlighted by an A. Thomas 3-pointer and a Foster dunk, to take 26-14 lead with about eight minutes to go in the first half. By the time the half ended, Clemson had pushed the lead out to 45-23.

The Tigers would continue to widen the gap after the break, going on a 15-1 run about midway through the second half to take a 75-36 lead.

The Tigers will begin the regular season on Monday, with Charleston Southern coming to town. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. (ACCNX).
