Top CB Target: First Clemson Night Game Experience ‘Did Not Disappoint’

Among the top prospects in attendance for Clemson’s game against Louisville last Saturday was Hough High School (Cornelius, N.C.) four-star cornerback Samari Matthews.

Although the Tigers fell to the Cardinals, 33-21, Matthews – a priority Clemson target and consensus top-135 national prospect in the 2026 class – came away very impressed by his experience during the night game at Death Valley.

“I feel like Clemson didn’t play their best, but this game doesn’t define them. I believe they are still a great team,” Matthews said to The Clemson Insider.

“This was my first time experiencing a Clemson game at night and it did not disappoint. I loved the atmosphere and everything about the experience.”

Matthews was the first recruit in his class to report an offer from Clemson, when the Tigers started extending 2026 offers earlier this year.

The 6-foot-1, 185-pound junior has traveled to Tiger Town multiple times, and his latest visit last Saturday gave him another chance to catch up with cornerbacks coach Mike Reed, as well as head man Dabo Swinney.

“My time with the coaches was great,” Matthews said. “I got to speak with Coach Dabo before the game, just having general conversation and catching up. My primary recruiter is Coach Reed, who I have a good relationship with.

“The message has been the same since they started recruiting me, which they would love for me to be a Tiger and I’m high priority.”

Prior to the Louisville game, Matthews also visited Clemson for the NC State game in late September – and he could make his way back to Death Valley one more time before season’s end.

“I might be back to Clemson November 30th (for the game vs. South Carolina),” Matthews said.

Matthews plans to make his commitment decision next summer prior to his senior year, and he says the Tigers have staying power as a top contender in his recruitment.

“Clemson will be there to the end of my recruitment journey,” he said.

Per the 247Sports Composite rankings, Matthews is the No. 7 cornerback nationally and No. 67 overall prospect in the country for the 2026 class. He is ranked as high as the nation’s No. 3 corner and No. 25 overall prospect in his class by Rivals.
