Good News for Former Clemson Coordinator

It appears Billy Napier’s job at Florida is safe.

In a letter sent out by Gators’ Athletic Director Scott Stricklin, the school said that the embattled head coach will continue in his position.

Napier currently has just a 15-18 overall record, with Florida just 4-4 heading towards the end of his third season.

“I wanted to let you know that Billy Napier will continue as head football coach of the Florida Gators,” Stricklin wrote. “As we’ve seen these past several weeks, the young men on this team represent what it means to be a Gator. Their resolve, effort and execution are evident in their performance and growth each week — building a foundation that promises greater success next season and beyond. …

“I am confident that Billy will meet the challenges and opportunities ahead. We will work alongside him to support any changes needed to elevate Gator football. As college athletics evolves, UF is committed to embracing innovation and strategy, ensuring the Gators thrive in today’s competitive landscape.”

Napier was almost immediately on the hot seat after the Gators started the season 1-2, with lopsided losses to both Miami and Texas A&M.

Napier began his coaching career at Clemson as a graduate assistant on Tommy Bowden’s staff from 2003-04. After spending a year at SC State as the QB coach in 2005, he returned to Clemson as TE coach and recruiting coordinator. After Bowden left, Napier was promoted to offensive coordinator when Dabo Swinney was hired as the full-time coach in 2009 where he spent two seasons calling the plays for the Tigers.
