Another Major Recruiting Change for College Football

College football experienced another sweeping change on Thursday.

The NCAA has issued a blanket waiver suspending the limit on the number of official visits college football programs are permitted to host in a given cycle.

The waiver is effective immediately and applies to the current recruiting cycle that began April 1 and runs to March 31, 2025.

The change was made at the request of the Division I Football Bowl Subdivision committee in an effort to give member schools “additional flexibility to address the impact of recent changes in NCAA legislation.” The announcement cited changes to the NCAA’s rules on eligibility for undergraduate four-year college transfers among the developments.

The change comes ahead of another massive change for the sport set to begin next year with the finalization of the House Settlement, which is set to grant roughly $2.8 billion in damages to former and current college athletes. It also paves the way for schools to directly share revenue with student-athletes. A final hearing to approve the settlement is set for April 7, 2025.

Under the old rules, schools were able to host recruits on an unlimited number of official visits, while being limited to just 70 official visits each recruiting cycle. Prospects have to pay their own way for unofficial visits, with schools paying for officials. The previous limit of 70 official visits had been in place since December 2022.

The early signing period is set to begin on December 4, with the later signing period beginning on February 5.
