Clemson Soccer Defeats Stanford to go to ACC Semifinal

CLEMSON – Clemson secured a 1-0 rematch win over Stanford Sunday to send the Tigers to the semifinal round of the ACC Tournament.

Clemson, the No. 2 tournament seed, fell 3-2 to the Cardinal in the third match of the season on September 9. The Tigers made sure they did not repeat their mistakes and improved to 5-1-1 all-time against Stanford, the seventh seed in the tournament.

Clemson grabbed the only score for either team in the 60th minute as Ransford Gyan took the ball all the way down the field and dished it to Meinhard for a bottom right, right-foot goal.

Meinhard’s goal may have been the only score, but the squad finished with three total shots on goal and 13 shots overall. Stanford recorded seven shots with two on goal.

With the win, Clemson (13-2-3) picked up its seventh shutout victory of the season, thanks to the defensive work of defenders like veteran Adam Lundegard and goalkeeper Patrick Donovan.

Donovan was in goal for the Tigers for the second game in a row after starter Joseph Andema left the last match of the regular season with an injury. Donovan finished with two saves.

The game became chippy early as the Tigers racked up 10 fouls in the first half. The Cardinal were not far behind with nine. The Tigers finished with 17 total fouls to the Cardinal’s 22.

Veteran forward Alex Meinhard was awarded a yellow card in the 24th minute for an unsporting penalty. Two additional yellow cards were given to Stanford players in the second half.

Following the win, the Tigers will venture to WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C., to take on the winner of #3 Duke and #11 California. The matchup is slated for Thursday, Nov. 14.
