Finebaum on FSU: ‘It Is the Biggest Falloff in College Football History’

Florida State was dismantled by Notre Dame, 52-3, last Saturday – the latest defeat in what has been a disastrous 2024 campaign for the Seminoles, who are now 1-9 after being ranked in the top 10 of both the preseason AP Top 25 and preseason Coaches Poll.

After winning the ACC Championship in 2023, Florida State had a 13-0 record at the time. But fast forward to the present, and FSU – with only two games left on its schedule this season – can only finish with three wins, at most, in 2024.

The last time FSU won just three games in a season was the 2020 season that cut short by COVID, when the Seminoles went 3-6. The last time FSU won only three games in a full season was 1975, when the Noles were 3-8.

“We’re all disappointed,” Florida State head coach Mike Norvell said after the loss to Notre Dame, via the Associated Press. “This is not the result we expected. This is not any part of what we want our program to look like. Guys battled throughout. Credit to the opponent what they were able to do. It’s a season full of results that make us sick, but we still have a choice to make as far as how we will finish — and that’s work and be better.”

On The Matt Barrie Show, ESPN’s Matt Barrie and Paul Finebaum weighed in on the Noles’ miserable season.

To put it into perspective, Michigan is 5-5 this season after going 15-0 and winning the national championship in 2023.

But for FSU to go from 13-0 to now 1-9?

“It is the biggest falloff in college football history,” Finebaum says.

“I mean Michigan, they lost their head coach (Jim Harbaugh to the NFL). Three to five losses were projected,” Finebaum added. “Three would’ve been great. Four, likely. Five, disappointing.

“But Florida State was a top-10 team when the season began. There’s no excuse for that. And Mike Norvell has literally lost all the goodwill he had from a year ago.”

Amid the dismal season, Norvell made major changes to his staff Sunday, firing offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Alex Atkins, defensive coordinator Adam Fuller and wide receivers coach Ron Dugans.

After an open date this weekend, FSU will try to earn a rare victory this season when it hosts Charleston Southern at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee on Saturday, Nov. 23 (1:30 p.m., ACCNX). The Noles will then finish the season with a home matchup against rival Florida on Saturday, Nov. 30.
