CLEMSON – A Clemson defender made the national stage for his play last Saturday.
In the third quarter of the No. 20 Tigers’ win against Virginia Tech, Clemson cornerback Ashton Hampton made an interception. However, it was not just an ordinary pick, and it earned him the third spot on SportsCenter’s Top 10.
As the ball from Hokies’ quarterback Kyron Drones flew toward receiver Da’Quan Felton, Hampton followed the receiver as he ran a fade route.
While Hampton attempted to reach for the ball with his left hand, he stretched his body and pulled it into his chest, securing it with his right arm. However, Hampton did it with his non-dominant hand.
“Are you left-handed?” a reporter asked Hampton. He responded, “No sir, I’m right-handed.”
Not only did Hampton make a huge play for the team, but he earned honors for his execution from the four-letter-network.
“I’ve been making plays since high school,” Hampton said. “It ain’t nothing but just on a bigger stage.”
A freshman from Tallahassee, Fla., Hampton committed to Clemson in 2023 as a three-star prospect out of Florida State University School and has been making an impact ever since, making multiple interceptions this season for the Tigers.
“I saw it on the way back from the airport,” Hampton said. “I was on Twitter, just scrolling, then I saw somebody say it was number three on SportsCenter. I was like, ‘Oh, that’s kind of cool,'” Hampton said. “It definitely made me happy.”
Hampton will search for more chances to make big plays when the Tigers face the Pittsburgh Panthers on Saturday in Pittsburgh, Pa.
