In a back-and-forth affair, Clemson beat Penn State 75-67, handing the Nittany Lions their first loss in the championship game of the Sunshine Slam at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach, Fla. There were eight lead changes in the contest.
Ian Schieffelin led the way, recording his third double-double of the season and second in a row, scoring a season-high 18 points while pulling down 12 rebounds. He also dished out eight assists, finishing just two shy of a triple-double.
“Ian was phenomenal, almost getting a triple-double,” Brad Brownell said after the win. “I thought altogether, guys just made a lot of really tough plays. It was a possession or two game most of the game.”
Chase Hunter also did his part, scoring 17 points, while shooting 3-of-6 from three-point land. The veteran guard also added five rebounds and four assists. Chauncey Wiggins added 14, giving Clemson three players to score in double figures.
The Tigers shot 9-of-19 from beyond the arc while holding Penn State to just 4-of-18. The Clemson defense also forced 17 turnovers, turning those into 16 points.
“I thought the three-point shooting was a factor,” Brownell added. “We just felt like three-point shooting could be a major difference maker.”
Clemson moves to 6-1 on the season while the Nittany Lions drop to 6-1 .
Turning Point
A three-point basket by Jaeden Zackery with just over six to go put the Tigers up 65-61. After back-to-back defensive stops, Schieffelin knocked down two free throws to extend the lead to 67-61. Penn State would pull back to within three just once more but a Schieffelin jumper put the Tigers right back up by five and the Tigers would never relinquish that lead.
