CLEMSON – On Tuesday, Troy Stellato became Clemson’s first portal departure of the 2024 season.
The redshirt junior, whose first two seasons with the Tigers were marred by injury, had carved out a role in the offense over the past two seasons. He started six games in 2023 and five more in 2024.
Stellato’s season came to an end after playing just eight snaps against Pitt. It would be later revealed that he was dealing with a thumb injury that he was just not able to play through. After the win over the Panthers, Dabo Swinney announced Stellato would miss the rest of the season due to the thumb needing to be addressed via a surgical procedure.
Now Stellato’s career at Clemson is officially over. The speedy wideout will enter the portal next week when it opens with two years of eligibility and will not travel with the team to the ACC Championship Game.
The Clemson Insider spoke with Stellato after the announcement regarding his decision to move on.
“Didn’t envision myself growing as a player here,” Stellato said. “Felt disrespected at times and still have no clue how I was demoted after the UVA game. Finally started getting in a rhythm. There was way more out there for me and I wasn’t getting the opportunity.”
Stellato came to Clemson as a member of the 2021 recruiting class. He was high 4-star prospect and the first receiver Tyler Grisham landed in his role as wide receivers coach. Rivals ranked him No. 135 overall.
During his first season with the Tigers, Stellato played in just two games due to injuries and ultimately redshirted. An ACL forced him to miss his entire second season.
In 2023, Stellato enjoyed a breakout campaign, catching 38 balls for 321 yards and a touchdown. He appeared in 12 of the 13 games.
This season, Stellato reeled in 25 catches for 264 yards and a touchdown. His seven catches in the win over Virginia were a career high, as were his 72 receiving yards.
