Swinney ‘Hopes’ Major Offensive Player can be Ready for ACC Title Game

CHARLOTTE — Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney gave the latest update on a major offensive player during Friday’s ACC Championship Press Conference from Bank of America Stadium.

Swinney revealed that running back Phil Mafah has been battling “a little injury,” which has played a role in his production the last four games.

“It’s just about getting him healthy,” Swinney said.

The Clemson coach said he “hopes Mafah can get there” by the time the No. 17 Tigers play No. 8 SMU in the ACC Championship Game Saturday (8 p.m., ABC).

Mafah leads Clemson (9-3, 7-1 ACC) with 1,078 yards and eight rushing TDs this season. However, its been obvious over the last month that the running back has not played at 100 percent.

Prior to Clemson’s game at Pittsburgh, Mafah had 981 yards and was averaging 109.0 yards per game. Heading into Saturday’s championship game that average has dropped to 89.8 yards. The senior has just 97 total rushing yards in the last three games combined.
