This ACC program is suffering a significant hit at the quarterback position.
Duke starting quarterback Maalik Murphy intends to enter the NCAA transfer portal, per ESPN’s Pete Thamel.
Murphy, who transferred to Duke for the 2024 season following two years at Texas from 2022-23, figures to be one of the most prized quarterbacks in the portal.
The 6-foot-5, 230-pound redshirt sophomore led the Blue Devils to a 9-3 record this season. He completed 60.3 percent of his passes for 2,933 yards and 26 touchdowns – a school record – while adding a couple more scores on the ground.
Murphy is heading to the portal with two years of eligibility left. According to ESPN, he doesn’t plan to play in the Gator Bowl between Duke and Ole Miss.
Prior to joining the Blue Devils, Murphy was primarily a backup at Texas and played in seven games for the Longhorns in 2023, throwing for 477 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions. He made two starts and went 2-0 in those games with victories over BYU and Kansas State.
The Inglewood, Calif., native was a four-star prospect in the 2022 recruiting class, ranked as high as the No. 129 overall prospect in the country by Rivals, which considered him the eighth-best pro-style quarterback in his class.
Duke, which won nine games in the regular season for the first time since 2014, is slated to play at Clemson next season.
