Portal Craziness Has Began and Clemson Has Needs

Portal season is upon us and Clemson has already seen three departures.

The transfer portal officially opened on Monday and the craziness is in full swing. A lot of movement was expected during this window and after just two full days, that is exactly what we have seen.

Dabo Swinney has yet to get overly invested in the portal. The Tigers have signed a couple of backup quarterbacks and went after a small number of offensive linemen that they failed to land after last season, but that is as involved as Clemson has been. That needs to change this year.

While Swinney has often been portrayed as being against the portal, and the evidence does point towards a little reluctance, the head coach has long maintained that if there were any gaps in his roster, he’d have no problem recruiting the portal.

The Tigers have already lost two wide receivers, with Troy Stellato and Noble Johnson announcing their intentions. That is two of the nine scholarship receivers on the roster this season and it’s possible we see more defections at the position.

When two freshmen come in and beat out all the other wideouts on the roster, departures should be expected. At the very least, Antonio Williams could elect to move on to the NFL. Either way, Clemson is already short on bodies at the position.

There are already multiple wide receivers in the portal that have said the Tigers have been in contact. One is Joseph Williams, out of Tulsa. The 6-foot-2 wideout was the AAC Freshman of the Year after totaling 558 yards and five touchdowns in just seven games.

Another is Eric Rivers, out of FIU. The speedy 5-foot-11 receiver totaled 62 receptions for 1,172 yards and 12 touchdowns this season. His finished the year Top 5 in receiving yards and touchdowns.

On the other side of the ball, safety Sherrod Covil has announced that he will be moving on as well. This is another position that needs to be looked at. With R.J. Mickens out of eligibility and Tyler Venables unlikely to be back, that is at least three safeties Clemson will lose and the staff signed just one in the 2025 recruiting class.

One of the biggest positions of need might be defensive end. This is area that saw its share of struggles this season and after only bringing in one in the 2025 class, those needs were not met there.

Two more spots that could be looked at are linebacker and even punter. With Barrett Carter moving on after the season, that room is definitely a little thin on talent.

Aidan Swanson is also done after the season and his backup, redshirt sophomore Jack Smith, is a bit of an unknown commodity at this point.
