Star Clemson Defender Lands Another Honor

The Associated Press All-America team was announced this week.

A star Clemson defender was honored with a spot on the AP All-America team, selected by a panel of AP Top 25 voters.

Clemson senior linebacker Barrett Carter received a third-team selection.

Carter has started all 13 games for the Tigers this season and leads the team in defensive snaps (762). He ranks second on the team in total tackles with 78, while he is tied for second with 10.5 tackles for loss and ranks third with 3.5 sacks. The 6-foot-1, 230-pounder has also posted nine pass breakups and nine quarterback pressures, as well as a fumble recovery.

Carter was a 2024 Butkus Award finalist for college football’s top linebacker, joining Levon Kirkland (1990), Keith Adams (2000), Dorian O’Daniel (2017), Tre Lamar (2018, Isaiah Simmons (2019) and Jeremiah Trotter Jr. (2023) among Clemson players to earn finalist selections all-time.

This season, in addition to being named a third-team AP All-American and Butkus Award finalist, Carter was a Lott IMPACT Trophy semifinalist and earned first-team All-ACC honors by both the conference and the AP.

After deciding to forgo the 2024 NFL Draft and instead return to Clemson for his senior campaign, Carter entered the 2024 season credited with 170 tackles (21.0 for loss), 9.0 sacks, 15 pass breakups, three interceptions, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries over 38 career games (26 starts).

A two-time All-America selection and two-time All-ACC honoree, Carter stood alongside teammate Jeremiah Trotter Jr. and North Carolina’s Cedric Gray as the only three FBS players to post 19 or more tackles for loss, 10-plus passes defensed, multiple forced fumbles and multiple interceptions across the 2022-23 seasons. In 2022, he joined Butkus Award winners Nakobe Dean and Isaiah Simmons among recent Power Five players to post at least 10 tackles for loss, five sacks, multiple interceptions and multiple forced fumbles in a single season.
