ESPN Tabs Two Tigers as Freshman All-Americans

On Friday, ESPN recognized some of college football’s future stars, including a couple of young and supremely talented Clemson Tigers.

ESPN released its freshman All-American team for the 2024 season (subscription required), and among the freshmen who were honored are Clemson’s Bryant Wesco Jr. and Sammy Brown.

Wesco caught 41 passes for 708 yards (a team-high 17.3-yard average) and five touchdowns over 12 games (11 starts) in 2024.

Earlier this season, the 6-foot-2, 180-pound wideout joined the legendary Sammy Watkins as the only players in Clemson history to post multiple 100-yard receiving games in the first four games of a college career.

“Wesco was a four-star recruit in the Class of 2024 who ranked No. 28 in the ESPN 300,” ESPN’s Tom Luginbill wrote. “He became a downfield threat for Cade Klubnik, leading all Tigers receivers by averaging 17.3 yards per catch… Clemson leaned on the freshman heavily in their ACC championship game win, where he had eight catches, 143-yard performance to go along with two touchdowns.”

As for Brown, the 6-foot-2, 235-pound linebacker earned ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year honors, joining defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence (2016), defensive tackle Bryan Bresee (2020) and safety Andrew Mukuba (2021) as Clemson’s record-setting fourth selection for that honor since its inception in 2007.

Brown, the 2023 high school Butkus Award winner, also joined T.J. Parker (12.5 in 2023), Myles Murphy (12.0 in 2020), Anthony Simmons (11.0 in 1995), Xavier Thomas (10.5 in 2018), Tyler Davis (10.0 in 2019) and Shaq Lawson (10.0 in 2013) as the seventh Clemson player to record double-digit tackles for loss as a true freshman.

“The former five-star’s mix of productivity, twitch and physicality landed him as the No. 13 overall player in the 2024 ESPN 300 and the second-best inside linebacker in the country when he arrived at Clemson,” Luginbill wrote. “Brown made a strong first impression with 80 tackles and five sacks in his debut year. His production took off once Clemson inserted him into the starting lineup for good on Nov. 9. Brown had 54 tackles and a pair of sacks in his ensuing six games including a 14-tackle showing against SMU in the ACC championship and 10 more tackles against Texas in the College Football Playoff. He has all the requisite building blocks to become a highly productive staple in the second level of Dabo Swinney’s defense for quite some time.”

Other players from the ACC that made ESPN’s freshman All-American team include North Carolina offensive lineman Aidan Banfield, Louisville all-purpose back Isaac Brown and Miami defensive back OJ Frederique Jr.
