ACC Makes History on Football Field in 2024

The ACC made some history on the football field in 2024.

This marks the first year in ACC history that four football programs – Clemson, Miami, SMU and Syracuse — reached at least 10 wins, per longtime Virginia sports writer and columnist David Teel.

That number could increase to five teams if Duke (9-3) upsets No. 14 Ole Miss in the Gator Bowl on Jan. 2.

Clemson, the 2024 ACC Champions, finished the 2024 season with a 10-4 overall record.

SMU concluded its first season in the ACC with an 11-3 overall record and went 8-0 in conference play during the regular season before falling to Clemson in the conference title game.

Syracuse (10-3) earned its 10th win of the season when it beat Washington State, 52-35, in the Holiday Bowl on Friday night.

Miami went 10-2 during the regular season before losing to No. 18 Iowa State, 42-41, in the Pop-Tarts Bowl on Saturday.

Unfortunately for the ACC, the conference has largely struggled in postseason play with a 1-9 conference bowl record through Sunday.

This marked the first year of the expanded ACC, with the addition of Stanford, California and SMU making the ACC a 17-team league for football and 18-team league for other sports.
