Clemson Holds Off Pitt in Overtime

Clemson was able to fend off a furious second-half rally by Pitt on Saturday, knocking off the Panthers 78-75 in overtime inside the Petersen Events Center in Pittsburgh, Pa.

The Tigers have now won three straight games overall and extended their winning streak over Pitt to 13 games.

Clemson guard Chase Hunter led the way, scoring 20 points and hitting on 5-of-9 from beyond the arc. It is the second time Hunter has scored at least 20 points this season. His five threes also tie a career-high.

Forward Ian Schieffelin added 15 points and 11 rebounds, giving the big man his eighth double-double of the season. He had 11 last season. Guard Jaeden Zackery pitched in with 16 points and Dillon Hunter added 10 points off the bench, giving the Tigers four players to hit the double-digit mark in scoring.

The Tigers (15-4, 7-1 ACC) led by as many as 14 points early in the second half, but a 19-4 Panthers run tied it up at 57-57 with just over eight minutes left in the contest. A 3-pointer by Ishmael Leggett gave Pitt a 62-61 lead with under five minutes to go. It was the Panthers’ first lead since early in the first half.

Leggett led the charge for the Panthers (12-6, 3-4 ACC), scoring 18 points and shooting 4-of-7 from three-point land.

After hitting 10 three-point baskets in the first half, the Tigers hit just four in the second half and overtime. Clemson finished 14-of-27 from the beyond the arc, setting a season high for the most made three’s in a game.

Pitt was 12-0 coming in when winning the battle on the boards but Clemson outrebounded the Panthers 32-30. The Tigers had 12 of the final 15 rebounds in the contest. Pitt pulled down 14 on the offensive glass, which led to 25 second chance points.

Clemson took a 40-30 lead into halftime, with Chase Hunter scoring 13 in the opening half and hitting 4-of-5 from beyond the arc. The Tigers shot 63 percent from three in the first half. Clemson is unbeaten (13-0) when leading at the break.

It Was Over When

With Clemson up two in overtime, Chase Hunter drilled a three-pointer with 14 seconds left that put the Tigers up 78-73. It was Hunter’s only three-point basket in the second half and was the Tigers’ second three-pointer of overtime after going the last 16:14 of regulation without a basket from behind the arc.

Road Dog

Six of Schieffelin’s eight double-doubles this year have come away from Littlejohn Coliseum. His last four have all come on the road.

Injury Update

Schieffelin’s back and calf strain issues over the past couple of games have been well-documented but the big man again battled through it. He didn’t seem to be as bothered against the Panthers, as he was Tuesday night in the win at Georgia Tech. Eight of his points came after halftime.
