RALEIGH, N.C. — Clemson used a late run to pull away from NC State and secure a 68-58 road win over the Wolfpack inside the Lenovo Center on Saturday.
The Tigers (18-4, 10-1) have now won six in a row and nine of their last 10 games, while NC State (9-12, 2-8) has lost six straight.
Chase Hunter paced Clemson with 20 points. The veteran guard was 2-of-5 from three-point land and 6-of-6 from the free-throw line.
Viktor Lakhin pitched in with 13 points and 10 rebounds, giving the big man his fourth double-double of the season. Chauncey Wiggins finished 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting.
Ian Schieffelin added 8 points while Jaeden Zackery pitched in with 7 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists.
NC State’s Dontrez Styles led all scorers with 24, hitting on 6-of-8 from beyond the arc.
Clemson used a 13-5 run highlighted by three-pointers by Lakhin and Chase Hunter to take a 51-43 lead with under eight minutes to go in the contest. NC State would get a three-ball from Styles to cut the lead back to five, but the Tigers would quickly push the lead back to 57-49 on a driving layup by Dillon Hunter. Two free throws by Wiggins would make it 59-49 with 5:03 remaining.
The Wolfpack would score the next four points to pull right back to within six at 59-53 with 3:44 left. The Tigers would hit six of their next eight shots to pull away late, leading by as many as 13 at one point.
After a tightly contested first half, Clemson would hit on four of its final five shots in the opening stanza to take a 34-31 lead into the break. NC State went the final 2:35 of the half without a field goal. The Tigers would come out and score the first four points of the second half, pushing the score out to 38-31, giving Clemson its biggest lead of the contest to that point.
It Was Over When
A breakaway dunk by Chase Hunter with about three minutes to go pushed the Tigers’ lead out to 64-53, giving Clemson all the momentum it would need to finish this one off. After a stop on the defensive end, Hunter would score another basket giving Clemson its biggest lead of the game at 66-53.
Crazy Stat
NC State won the battle on the offensive glass 13-4 but only had eight second-chance points.
Historic Win
The win marked the 450th in Brad Brownell’s coaching career. Clemson is now 10-1 in ACC play for just the second time in program history. This marks the Tigers’ fourth straight ACC road win, tied for second best in school history.
Injury Updates
Schieffelin continues to battle through back spasms. The veteran big man was once again sporting the back brace during pregame and at halftime. Schieffelin has also been dealing with a mild calf strain.
