Trevor Lawrence says he’s happy in Jacksonville and wants to stay with the Jaguars for the long haul.
This week, the Jaguars’ franchise quarterback and former Clemson star set the record straight on the Pittsburgh Steelers trade rumors.
During an appearance on the Up & Adams Show with NFL personality Kay Adams, Lawrence was asked about the recent reportst that the Steelers had inquired about trading for Lawrence.
Lawrence said he has “no idea” if it’s true or not whether the Steelers wanted him.
“I know that we weren’t involved in conversations about that, as far as Jacksonville goes,” he said. “I don’t know about the Steelers’ desires and wants. I don’t know.”
Lawrence shot down any possibility of being traded. The 25-year-old pointed out that he has a no-trade clause in his contract, while making it clear that he isn’t interested in playing for any team but the Jags.
“I didn’t really see anything. My agent texted me, and then of course I saw it after. He texted me and said, ‘Hey, this is a report that’s out there, I don’t think there’s anything to it but I’ll check into it,’” Lawrence recalled. “So I saw it, and it’s funny though. When he sent it to me, I was like – I wouldn’t say your heart drops, but you’re kind of like, ‘What?’ I have a no-trade clause in my contract, so I would know about it if I was getting traded or if that was something that was gonna happen. I’d have to be on board with it, which I’m not.”
Added Lawrence: “I’m happy here in Jacksonville. We want to win a Super Bowl here, and I think we can do that, and I don’t wanna leave Jacksonville. So, I’m happy here. Obviously not going to Pittsburgh.”
The Jaguars are currently in the process of searching for a general manager, so according to Lawrence, his agent got in touch with ESPN insider Adam Schefter regarding the trade rumors.
New Jaguars head coach Liam Coen also reached out to Lawrence after the reports surfaced.
“I think my agent reached out to Adam Schefter and was just like, ‘Hey, you heard anything about this?’ Because we don’t have a GM,” Lawrence said. “Liam texted me actually, I guess the day after it came out, and Liam said, ‘I shouldn’t even have to say this, but that’s not coming from us.’ I was like, ‘Yeah, I figured.’ So, we’re all good. He didn’t even have to send that. There was no doubt on my side.”
When asked about Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin as it relates to Tomlin reportedly eyeing Lawrence to replace Russell Wilson, Lawrence said he likes Tomlin but is perfectly satisfied in Jacksonville.
“He’s a good guy, but I’m set here,” Lawrence said. “Like I said, we love Jacksonville. This is home for us, and there’s a lot more on the football side that we’ve yet to accomplish here, and I’m excited about what we’re building. The future is very bright and I want to be the guy here for a long time.”
Lawrence signed a five-year, $275 million contract extension with Jacksonville last offseason.
The No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Lawrence completed 60.6 percent of his passes for 2,045 yards with 11 touchdown passes and seven interceptions over 10 games during the 2024 season. He was placed on injured reserve back on Dec. 4 after his shoulder injury and concussion, and he underwent successful surgery on Dec. 17 to repair the AC joint sprain in his left shoulder.
Over the first four seasons of his NFL career from 2021-24, Lawrence has completed 63.3 percent of his passes for 13,815 yards and 69 touchdowns with 46 interceptions in 60 games.
