Jags Exec: ‘I’ll Pound the Table’ for Lawrence as Franchise QB

The Jacksonville Jaguars took former Clemson star Trevor Lawrence with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, and then prior to the 2024 season, the Jaguars signed Lawrence to a massive five-year, $275 million contract extension.

Although Jacksonville hasn’t enjoyed the level of success it hoped for in Lawrence’s career so far, Jaguars executive Tony Boselli is fully convinced that they have they have the right guy at quarterback.

Boselli – the Hall of Fame offensive lineman and Jaguars legend, who was hired as the Jaguars’ executive vice president of football operations in early February – is excited about the future in Jacksonville with Lawrence and his new head coach, Liam Coen.

“You’ve got to get the head coach right, you’ve got to get the quarterback right,” Boselli said on SiriusXM NFL Radio. “We believe that we have a franchise quarterback in Trevor Lawrence. I’ll pound the table for that one.”

The Jaguars have a 22-38 record in the 60 games that Lawrence has started across his first four NFL seasons. Lawrence helped lead the Jags to the AFC South title and a playoff victory in 2022, but Jacksonville has missed the postseason in Lawrence’s other three seasons.

However, Boselli isn’t blaming that on Lawrence.

Boselli pointed out that Coen marks the third head coach for Lawrence as he enters his fifth NFL season, and that Lawrence needs stability when it comes to both the head coaching position and offensive system/play-calling.

“This is going to be his third head coach, and all the different systems and everything else,” Boselli said. “You can’t do that. You’ve got to help a quarterback have consistency and build with him, and build it around him.”

Not only does Lawrence need consistency from a head coaching and systematic standpoint, but he also needs a more reliable offensive line in front of him, and improving the O-line is something Boselli said Coen is prioritizing in hopes of aiding Lawrence’s development.

“We talked about Trevor, obviously, and the quarterback, but his main focus is the offensive line,” Boselli said. “Line of scrimmage. He says, ‘Listen, we have to get the O-line right. If you can’t control the line of scrimmage, if you can’t run it, and you can’t protect, you can’t win.’”

Lawrence completed 60.6 percent of his passes for 2,045 yards with 11 touchdown passes and seven interceptions over 10 games during the 2024 season. The 25-year-old was placed on injured reserve Dec. 4 after his shoulder injury and concussion, and he underwent successful surgery on Dec. 17 to repair the AC joint sprain in his left shoulder.

Over his first four NFL seasons, Lawrence has completed 63.3 percent of his passes for 13,815 yards and 69 touchdowns with 46 interceptions in his 60 games.
