Renfrow Responds to Retirement Rumors

Clemson legend Hunter Renfrow took to social media Wednesday in response to retirement rumors.

It looks like Renfrow may not be ready to hang up his cleats just yet, contrary to social media posts floating around Wednesday that Renfrow had decided to retire from the NFL.

Renfrow quipped back on X (formerly Twitter) to a post from the “NFL Rumors” account, which posted, “Former #Raiders WR Hunter Renfrow has announced his retirement.”

“Just when I thought about making a comeback I get hit with this bombshell…… guess I shouldn’t have started working out again 2 months ago lol,” Renfrow wrote.

Renfrow last played in the NFL in 2023. He became a free agent in March 2024 after being released by the Las Vegas Raiders, but he was unsigned for all of the 2024 season.

Renfrow was mentioned as a potential free-agent pickup for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after wide receiver Chris Godwin suffered a season-ending ankle injury last October, but Bucs insider Greg Auman said then that Tampa Bay “had not reached out, and I would classify him more as retired than unsigned.”

Renfrow was highly productive across his first three seasons with the Raiders from 2019-21, tallying 208 receptions for 2,299 yards and 15 touchdowns. However, he caught only 36 passes for 330 yards and two touchdowns across 10 games in 2022 while being limited due to injury, then had career lows with 25 catches, 255 receiving yards and no touchdowns over 17 games in his final year with the Raiders in 2023 — two years after his Pro Bowl 2021 campaign that saw him record career highs with 103 receptions, 1,038 yards and nine touchdowns.

Following that 2021 season, Renfrow signed a two-year, $32 million contract extension in June 2022 including $21 million in guaranteed money.

Renfrow has posted 269 receptions for 2,884 yards and 17 touchdowns in 73 games over his NFL career.

He was drafted by the Raiders in the fifth round (149th overall) of the 2019 NFL Draft following a legendary Clemson career during which he won two national titles while racking up 186 receptions for 2,133 yards and 15 touchdowns.
