How Did Clemson Do in Jay Bilas’ March Madness Bracket Picks?

Before tipoff of March Madness, ESPN college basketball analyst Jay Bilas broke down his bracket, making selections for every single game in the NCAA Tournament (subscription required).

As far as Clemson is concerned, Bilas sees a one-win showing for the Tigers in the tourney.

Clemson (27-6) is the No. 5 seed in the Midwest Region and will face No. 12 seed McNeese State (27-6) in Providence, R.I. on Thursday in the first round.

Bilas picked Clemson to win, but says the potential for an upset is “high.”

“McNeese can really force turnovers and create chaos,” Bilas wrote. “But Clemson does a nice job of controlling tempo, and Brad Brownell is among the nation’s best coaches. If Clemson doesn’t cough it up against pressure, the Tigers win this one. Still, this region has its fair share of upset picks. It would not surprise me to see Clemson and/or Purdue slip on a banana peel early.”

Bilas pegged Clemson’s Chase Hunter, an All-ACC First Team selection, as the player to watch in Thursday’s game against McNeese.

“Hunter is the leading scorer (16.4 PPG) and a steady, trustworthy player on a Clemson team that has good guards and excellent rebounders inside,” Bilas wrote.

Bilas picked Purdue, the No. 4 seed in the Midwest Region, to beat No. 13 seed High Point and advance to play Clemson in the Round of 32.

Bilas predicts the Boilermakers to beat the Tigers, though once again, he sees “high” potential for an upset.

“I am going with Braden Smith and Trey Kaufman-Renn to advance, but it is more of a coin flip than anything,” Bilas wrote.

As for Bilas’ Final Four picks, he has all four No. 1 seeds squaring off – Auburn vs. Florida, and Houston vs. Duke. He picked Florida and Houston to meet in the national championship game, with the Gators winning it all.

This marks the fifth time under head coach Brad Brownell and second consecutive season that Clemson has advanced to the NCAA Tournament, coming off the program’s second-ever Elite Eight appearance last season.

This season, the Tigers have set new school records for wins in a season (27), ACC wins (18) and win percentage (.900) and ACC road wins (9). Clemson was ranked No. 12 in the AP Top 25 Men’s College Basketball Poll that was released Monday ahead of the NCAA Tournament.

Thursday’s game against McNeese at Amica Mutual Pavilion in Providence, R.I. is set for a 3:15 p.m. tipoff on truTV.
