Clemson Makes Change to Starting Rotation

It looks like Clemson will have a new Sunday starter when the No. 7 Tigers host No. 11 Wake Forest this weekend.

Over the first five weeks of the season, Justin LeGuernic has served in that role, but after giving up six runs and eight free passes over his last two starts, it appears that head coach Erik Bakich is ready to make a change.

Weekend Starting Pitching Matchups

• Friday – RHP Logan Lunceford (WFU) vs. RHP Aidan Knaak (CU)
• Saturday – LHP Matthew Dallas (WFU) vs. LHP Ethan Darden (CU)
• Sunday – RHP Blake Morningstar (WFU) vs. TBA (CU)

LeGuernic did pitch a scoreless inning out of the bullpen in Wednesday’s run-rule win over The Citadel, his first relief appearance of the season. Through six appearances, the lefty has an ERA of 7.16 and has walked 11, while hitting seven more batters in 16.1 innings of work.

Despite the struggles from LeGuernic on Sundays, the Clemson pitching staff has been a strength of the team this season. The Tigers currently sport a team ERA of 3.71 with opponents hitting just .202 against Clemson pitching.

As for who might step in and fill that void, that might depend on how the first two games play out. BJ Bailey could be an option. The lefty has gone more than four innings twice already out of the bullpen and is 2-0 with a minuscule 0.51 ERA. Bailey has allowed one earned run in 17.2 innings of work with 22 strikeouts and just five walks.

The Demon Deacons have had Clemson’s number of late, sweeping the Tigers at Doug Kingsmore in 2023, and then sweeping at home last season. Bakcih is currently 0-6 against Wake Forest since becoming head coach.
