Clemson Defeats Presbyterian Wednesday Evening

CLEMSON – No. 6 Clemson scored runs in four separate innings on the way to a 9-1 win over Presbyterian on Wednesday evening at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. With the win, the Tigers sweep the two-game season series and move to 24-4 while the Blue Hose fall to 12-14.

Clemson wasted no time jumping out to lead in the first inning. Dominic Listi drew a four-pitch walk to start and Jarren Purify singled to put two runners on base. Following a double steal, Luke Gaffney lifted a sacrifice fly out to right field to score Listi for a 1-0 lead. Consecutive walks to Tryston McCladdie and Josh Paino loaded the bases to set up another run when Tristan Bissetta drew a four-pitch walk to force a run in and make it 2-0.

Presbyterian used three straight walks to start the second inning and an infield groundout to force a run in to cut the lead to 2-1.

The Tigers answered in the bottom of the frame with a run of their own. Andrew Ciufo drew a walk, Listi singled, and following a passed ball Purify drove in Ciufo on a RBI groundout to stretch the lead back to two at 3-1.

Clemson put a big number up in the fourth inning to create even more separation. Listi started things again with a walk and Purify doubled to set up a two-run single by Cam Cannarella. Two pitches later, Luke Gaffney hit a two-run homer to stretch the lead to 7-1.

The Tigers added two runs in the seventh inning. Ciufo started things with a one-out single before Listi was hit by a pitch and Purify walked to load the bases. Cannarella worked a walk to force in a run for his third RBI of the game to make it 8-1. Gaffney hit his second sacrifice fly of the game, picking up his fourth RBI, to stretch it out to 9-1.

Clemson reliever Chance Fitzgerald (3-0) earned the win after tossing a career-high 5.0 innings and allowing no runs on two hits and one walk with a personal best six strikeouts. Presbyterian starter Luke Gibson (0-1) suffered the loss after allowing two runs on one hit and four walks in 1.0 innings.

The Tigers finished the game with 10hits, led by Purify and McCladdie with two each, while the Blue Hose tallied four hits in the contest.

Following the end of their 16-game homestand, Clemson returns to action on Friday at 6:00 p.m. as they travel to Atlanta to face #25 Georgia Tech in their first ACC road series of the year.
