Swinney on ‘Destructive’ True Freshman DL: ‘He’s Gonna Help Us’

With multiple Clemson defensive tackles working their way back from injuries, highly touted true freshman defensive tackle Amare Adams has seen plenty of action in spring practice.

And according to head coach Dabo Swinney, Adams has taken advantage of his opportunities this spring, showing that he will be able to help the Tigers in Year 1.

“He’s another guy, with (Demonte) Capehart out… and Stephiylan (Green) out for the spring, Champ Thompson out for the spring — it’s been a great opportunity for Amare, and so he’s gotten a ton of reps,” Swinney said following Wednesday’s scrimmage at Memorial Stadium.

“So, what we’ve seen is, he’s gonna help us,” Swinney added, smiling. “That’s what we’ve seen.”

Specifically, what has Swinney seen from Adams – the highest-rated signee in Clemson’s 2025 recruiting class – that tells Swinney he can contribute right away as a true freshman this fall?

“He’s big and he moves people and he knows how to win,” Swinney said of Adams, who is listed at 6-foot-4, 285 pounds.

“He can destruct blocks. He’s twitchy. He’s smart. That’s what it is – big, strong, destructive human being.”

A five-star and the No. 1 player in the state of South Carolina by multiple recruiting services, Adams signed with Clemson this past December before enrolling early in January.

When he signed with Clemson during the December early signing period, Adams had collected 250 career tackles, 40 tackles for loss and 14 sacks in his prep career, including 66 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, four sacks and nine quarterback pressures in his senior season prior to the early signing period.

The multi-sport athlete also played basketball and ran track at South Florence High School.
