Tigers Take it on the Chin in Game 2

Saturday was not a kind day for the Clemson Softball Team.

Still smarting from a Game 1 loss to the Tigers on Friday, the 17th-ranked Cardinal evened their series with No. 25 Clemson, thanks to an 11-1 victory at Stanford Stadium in Game 2 Saturday in Stanford, Calif. The loss ends the Tigers’ 8-game ACC win streak.

The Cardinal scored four runs in the fourth inning, three in the second and four in the fourth inning to run rule Clemson in five innings. Brooke McCubbin, who earned the save in Friday’s win, suffered the loss in the circle for the Tigers.

McCubbin was run off after giving up seven runs in the first two innings. She did not record an out in the second inning before being pulled for freshman Macey Cintron, who did not fair much better.

In all, Stanford tallied nine hits in four innings and scored 11 runs. Emily Jones went 3-for-3, including a home run, while Taryn Kern was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a home run.

The Cardinal (25-7, 9-5 ACC) also got a grand slam from Kyra Chan with one out in the bottom of the fourth, which pushed Stanford to its 10-run lead. Jade Berry also drove in two runs.

Clemson (29-11, 10-4 ACC) started the game with two-out single from Marian Collins in the first inning that scored Alex Brown for a 1-0 lead. However, that was the only hit of the game for the Tigers.

Though she walked five, pitcher Alyssa Houston settled down and struck out nine batters to earn the win.
