Clemson Baseball got a two-run home run from Tristan Bissetta and two RBIs from Luke Gaffney, as the sixth-ranked Tigers completed a three-game sweep of California on Sunday with a 4-3 victory at Stu Gordon Stadium in Berkeley, Calif.
The Tigers (30-5, 9-3 ACC) have won five straight games.
Trailing 1-0 in the top of the fourth inning, Bissetta lifted a long ball to right centerfield with two outs for a two-run homer.
Clemson extended its lead to 3-1 in the top of the fifth inning when Gaffney singled up the middle with two outs to plate Cam Cannarella, who drew a two-out walk and stole second to get into scoring position.
The Bears (16-15, 6-9 ACC) rallied to tie the game, 3-3, in the bottom of the sixth. Reliever Drew Titsworth’s wild pitch with two outs allowed one run to score and then Max Handron singled to leftfield to score Jacob French with the equalizer.
Clemson quickly regained the lead in the top of the seventh inning. After being hit by a pitch, Jarren Purify stole second base and moved to third on a ground ball to second base by Cannarella.
Gaffney produced his second RBI of the afternoon by lining out to centerfield just enough to bring Purify home with the eventual game-winning run.
The Tigers had an opportunity to extend their one-run lead in the ninth inning, as they loaded the bases with no outs thanks to a hit and two walks. However, Gaffney hit into a 3-2-3 double play and then after Collin Priest loaded the bases again with a two-out walk, Jacob Jarrell struck out looking on a breaking ball from reliever Ethan Foley to end the Clemson threat.
Clemson was 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position on Sunday. The Tigers stranded 11 runners overall.
Though he did not get the win, for a second week in a row B.J. Bailey pitched well for the Tigers.
Last week, the graduate student threw 6 2/3 innings, while striking out eight batters and allowing just four hits in Clemson’s win at Georgia Tech. On Sunday, he was once again solid, while working 5 1/3 innings. Though Bailey was charged with three earned runs, he gave up just five hits while striking out four batters.
Titsworth was credited with his second win on the season, while Lucas Mahlstedt earned his national high 11th save of the season.
However, Mahlstedt’s save did not come easy. He started the bottom of the ninth by allowing a base hit, and after a sacrifice moved pincher hitter Ethan Kodama (the tying run to second), he struck out Seth Gwynn looking on a 3-2 count.
Mahlstedt then allowed Jarren Advincula to walk on four pitches before finally ending the game by inducing Alex Birge to popup to Andrew Ciufo at short.
