National Outlet Names Clemson Safety as Best Day 3 NFL Draft Fit for One Team

A national outlet recently identified the best player fit for each team on Day 3 of the 2025 NFL Draft.

Pro Football Focus (PFF) pegged Clemson safety R.J. Mickens as the best fit for the New York Jets.

Here’s what PFF’s Mason Cameron had to say regarding why Mickens is the prospect for the Jets to target on the third and final day of the draft:

“Mickens brings an NFL pedigree — his father Ray was drafted by the Jets in 1996 — which shows up on tape in his awareness and instincts. Across his four seasons at Clemson, Mickens posted a zone PFF coverage grade in the 98th percentile. The Jets spoke with Mickens at the Shrine Bowl, showing interest in continuing the lineage.”

Mickens recorded 229 tackles (13.5 for loss), seven interceptions, 15 pass breakups and a fumble recovery across 60 games (30 starts) in his Clemson career from 2020-24.

Mickens, who became the 10th player in Clemson history to play 60 career games, earned a third-team all-conference nod from Phil Steele in 2021 and was a third-team All-ACC selection by Pro Football Focus in 2022.

Mickens earned fourth-team All-ACC recognition from Steele this past season, when he finished third on the team with a career-high 85 tackles (including a career-high 6.0 for loss) while adding seven pass breakups and two interceptions over 13 games (all starts).

The 2025 NFL Draft is scheduled to be held from April 24-26 inside and around iconic Lambeau Field and Titletown in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

PFF’s 2025 NFL Draft Big Board ranks Mickens as the No. 240 overall prospect in this year’s draft class.

A recent mock draft from CBS Sports’ Chris Trapasso has Mickens going to the Miami Dolphins in the fourth round with the No. 116 overall pick.
