New Jaguars QB Coach Raves About Lawrence

Trevor Lawrence has a new quarterbacks coach, and it’s safe to say he’s already been very impressed by the former Clemson star.

Spencer Whipple, who was hired as the Jacksonville Jaguars’ quarterbacks coach in early February, joined The OZone Podcast and discussed what it’s been like to work with Lawrence so far in their short time together.

Whipple gave his first impressions of Lawrence and raved about the Jaguars’ franchise QB.

“He’s just been unbelievable,” said Whipple, who is entering his seventh season coaching in the NFL after six seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, most recently as pass game specialist (2023-24).

“He’s been just a great, great person at heart. He’s super hard-working. Diligent. Takes care of himself. He’s eager to learn. He wants to improve, just in the small time, sample size we have here. But you can just tell, the guy, he cares about the team and improvement and all the things that come with playing the quarterback position, which can be a lot. He’s just been great to work with, this time we’ve been together.”

Lawrence is tasked with adjusting to a new offense under first-year head coach Liam Coen, who will handle the play-calling duties for the Jags, and Lawrence has eagerly sought to learn about Coen’s system, according to Whipple.

“His eagerness to find out more about this system – hey, when can I learn a little bit more, dig in? So, that’s what comes with being a high-level quarterback in this league,” Whipple said.

“As far as a person and preparation, just been unbelievable. Nothing but great things to say so far as we’ve been working with him, and can’t wait to keep going.”

Lawrence is now entering his fifth NFL season in 2025 after being selected with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

A 2022 Pro Bowler, Lawrence has completed 63.3 percent of his passes for 13,815 yards and 69 touchdowns with 46 interceptions across 60 games over his first four pro campaigns from 2021-24.

The Jaguars signed Lawrence to a five-year, $275 million contract extension prior to the 2024 season, when the 25-year-old had a 60.6 completion percentage with 2,045 passing yards, 11 touchdown passes and seven interceptions in 10 games before being placed on injured reserve Dec. 4 after his shoulder injury and concussion. He underwent successful surgery on Dec. 17 to repair the AC joint sprain in his left shoulder.

Lawrence will be limited this spring as he continues to recover from the surgery but is on track to be fully cleared by the time training camp rolls around.
