CHARLOTTE — While many high school prospects like to stretch the recruiting process out into the summer after official visits, Gordon Sellars didn’t need that long.
The four-star wideout announced a commitment to Clemson on Friday, choosing the Tigers over South Carolina, Georgia, Michigan and North Carolina A&T. However, this was a battle that ultimately came down to the two in-state rivals, with Clemson coming out on top.
Sellars was a frequent visitor to Clemson over the past year. He made two gameday visits in the fall, then returned for the Elite Retreat in early March. His final visit came for the spring game earlier this month.
It was after that March visit, though, that Sellars really started feeling like Dabo Swinney’s program was the right fit for him.
“I had a good feeling about it after the junior day,” Sellars told The Clemson Insider. “I was so close to pulling the trigger.”
With his recruitment now shut down, Sellars can fully concentrate on his senior season at Providence Day, and he can do so without having to worry about the added pressure that the recruiting process brings with it.
“All the stress is off my shoulders,” Sellars added. “I don’t have to worry about my recruitment.”
“It feels great. I don’t have to worry about impressing a coach. Having to do something special because a coach is coming to watch me. Whether a win loss, good play or bad play, I know that the Tigers will be there for me.”
As a junior, Sellars helped lead his team to an appearance in the state title game. The 6-foot-3 wideout totaled 50 catches for 975 yards and 10 touchdowns, leading the team in all three of those categories.
Not only is he looking to keep that momentum rolling as a senior, but he’s also looking forward to helping some of his teammates get noticed.
“For me, the bigger thing is getting some shine to my teammates around me,” Sellars added. “All them boys are dawgs and can play.
