Barrett Carter heard his name called during the third and final day of the 2025 NFL Draft on Saturday, when the former Clemson star linebacker was selected by the Cincinnati Bengals in the fourth round with the No. 119 overall pick.
After Carter was taken, NFL Network analysts Daniel Jeremiah and Charles Davis gave their thoughts on the pick during the network’s coverage of the draft.
Jeremiah commented on what Carter, a two-time All-America selection and two-time All-ACC honoree, will bring to the Bengals as a ‘backer.
“Spy the quarterback, backside speed,” Jeremiah said. “Speed, speed. Did I mention speed? That’s his game.”
In his Clemson career from 2021-24, Carter was credited by Clemson’s coaching staff with 254 tackles (31.5 for loss), 12.5 sacks, 24 pass breakups, three interceptions, two forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries over 52 games (40 starts). He was a Butkus Award finalist as a senior in 2024, when he recorded 84 tackles (10.5 for loss), 3.5 sacks, nine pass breakups and a fumble recovery over 14 games (all starts).
At the conclusion of his career, Carter’s 2,482 career snaps were the most by a Tiger linebacker on record. He was the only player in the nation during his four-year career to record at least 30 tackles for loss, at least 20 pass breakups and three or more interceptions.
Carter became the 84th NFL Draft selection in Dabo Swinney’s head coaching tenure and the 16th fourth-round pick of his tenure, while Carter’s selection marks the third time under Swinney that a linebacker has been Clemson’s first selection of a draft.
Clemson’s head coach is certainly a big fan of Carter.
“They absolutely love him at Clemson,” Davis said. “When you ask Dabo Swinney, his head coach, about all-time Clemson players, Barrett Carter is one of the first names that rolls off his tongue.”
