Many believe Clemson’s Peter Woods is primed for a huge season and poised to become a household name in 2025.
That includes CBS Sports, which named Woods among breakout stars to watch during the 2025 season.
The 6-foot-3, 315-pound defensive lineman is one of 10 players that made the list and one of two players from the ACC (Miami cornerback OJ Frederique Jr.).
Here’s what CBS Sports’ Chris Hummer wrote about Woods heading into what could be a big-time junior campaign with the Tigers:
Peter Woods is already widely considered one of the sport’s top defensive linemen entering 2025. But he’s got a chance to emerge as a real force if he moves back inside next year.
The 6-3, 315-pound Woods played a large chunk of the 2024 season on the edge as the Tigers sought more production from that position opposite T.J. Parker. But given Clemson’s edge investment in the transfer portal — it brought in edges Will Heldt (Purdue) and Jeremiah Alexander (Alabama) — Woods projects to again play on the interior in 2025.
In that case, Woods will almost certainly be one of the country’s best defensive tackles. He’s a nimble 315-pounder with the ability to collapse the pocket and importantly eat up blocks in the run game. Don’t be shocked to see Woods’ name in the All-American mix after next season and high up in the 2026 NFL Draft.
Woods was named by Pro Football Focus as the top returning interior defensive lineman in the country entering the 2025 season, and he’s been projected as a top-three pick in multiple 2026 NFL Mock Drafts, including one from ESPN’s Jordan Reid, who predicted Woods to go to the Tennessee Titans with the third overall pick.
“If I were making a way-too-early rankings board, Woods would have an argument to be at the top,” Reid wrote. “At 6-foot-3 and 315 pounds, he has a nonstop motor and wreaks havoc. He has excellent hand power to stack, shed and disrupt plays. Woods had three sacks last season on the interior, and his pass-rush upside would be welcomed in Tennessee.”
While splitting time between defensive tackle and defensive end as a sophomore last season, Woods recorded 32 tackles (8.5 for loss), 3.0 sacks and a forced fumble in 391 defensive snaps over 11 games (10 starts).
After coming to Clemson as ESPN’s No. 4 overall prospect for the 2023 recruiting class, Woods earned freshman All-American honors in 2023, when the former five-star prospect posted 27 tackles (2.5 for loss) and a forced fumble in 307 snaps over 12 games (two starts), to go along with 10 quarterback pressures, the most of any Clemson defensive tackle.
Before enrolling at Clemson in January 2023, Woods led Thompson High School (Alabaster, Ala.) to four straight 7A State Championships (2019-22) and finished his high school career with 260 tackles, 72 tackles for loss and 29.5 sacks.
