Swinney: Notre Dame Series Gives Clemson ‘Options’

AMELIA ISLAND, Fla. — Clemson and Notre Dame agreeing to a 12-year series that begins in 2027 is a win for everybody. And in a multitude of ways.

First and foremost, it’s a win for the fans, but head coach Dabo Swinney believes it runs much deeper than pleasing the fanbases. With the rapidly changing landscape in college football, Swinney says it sets both programs up nicely from a scheduling standpoint, seeing how there’s so little clarity about what the schedules might look like just a few short years from now.

“It just gives us a lot of options,” Swinney told The Clemson Insider, who is at the ACC Spring Meetings for the 13th consecutive year at the Ritz Carlton in Amelia Island. “Because there are a lot of changes that will probably come about, as we know in this business, between now and ’28 or ’29. The SEC may go to nine games, so there’s a lot of things. It is a win-win for everyone. It is a win for Notre Dame, it is a win for Clemson, and it is a win for the fans.”

Clemson currently has future home-and-home series scheduled against Oklahoma and Georgia over the next decade or so. However, with the SEC possibly moving to a nine-game conference schedule in the future, those matchups could be in jeopardy.

“I think Graham (Neff) has done a great job of positioning us with some optionality and some leeway, if things change in the future,” Swinney said. “When it comes to the playoff, or leagues changing, or teams go to nine games, and they change their schedule model, or whatever. So, I think it is a really good thing for Notre Dame and Clemson.”

The two teams have faced off six times during Swinney’s tenure at Clemson, with the Tigers holding a 4-2 advantage in the series over that stretch. Each team has won two games on their home turf, with Clemson taking the two contests played at neutral sites.

One of those was a 30-3 win in the 2018 College Football Playoff and the second came in the 2020 ACC Championship Game, a 35-10 victory by the Tigers.

The next time the two teams face off will come in 2027, a matchup set to be held at Memorial Stadium. And it’s a rivalry that will only grow stronger with the two programs set to start doing battle on an annual basis.

“It is a great series,” Swinney said. “It’s become something fun for us. Obviously, Notre Dame is a great program, great history, great brand. I think they look at Clemson as, like, ‘Hey, this is a game that can really help us from a national standpoint,’ and obviously, that says a lot about our program.”
