Clemson Finds a way to Get it Done, Again

CLEMSON — Clemson keeps finding different ways to win softball games, and it did it once again in Saturday’s 1-0 victory over No. 3 seed Northwestern in Game 3 of the Clemson Regional.

This time the Tigers’ Aby Vieira scored on a suicide squeeze in the top of the ninth inning to beat the Wildcats. Freshman Marian Collins laid down a perfectly executed bunt on a 1-1 count to complete the squeeze.

“It was a hard fought battle,” Clemson head coach John Rittman said. “It was a lot of back and forth. It was a pitching duel. I have said it several times in the last month, that we have different ways to win games and it is always someone different.”

This time it was pitcher Brooke McCubbin, who came in relief for the sixth straight game and earned a victory in the circle. The senior allowed just two hits in 5 2/3 innings of work.

The Tigers will face No. 2 seed Kentucky today at 1 p.m. The Wildcats won both games on Saturday over USC Upstate (11-0) and Northwestern (8-3) to advance to the championship round of the Clemson Regional.
