Clemson Puts ‘Exclamation Point’ On Weekend

After dropping its third straight ACC series to Duke last weekend, Erik Bakich said his Clemson team had just one option heading into the final series of the regular season. To come out swinging.

That is exactly what the Tigers did this weekend, with the offense saving its best for last. Clemson totaled more than 40 hits in a sweep of Pitt. The team hit over .340 in the weekend series, with Bakich watching on as Clemson averaged 10 runs per game in the sweep.

“Thought our guys did a great job and put an exclamation point on the weekend,” Bakich said. “Got a great start from Talan Bell. Put up four zeros to start and allowed our offense to separate. We were able to score eight runs during those innings.”

Every hitter in the lineup reached base multiple times in the series finale, a 13-6 Clemson win. The offense pounded out 17 hits, including home runs from Jacob Jarrell, Collin Priest and Dominic Listi.

Cam Cannarella was 3-for-4 with two doubles and Jack Crighton finished up a 9-for-13 weekend by registering four hits, with three doubles and a triple.

“They started to come back a little bit, and we just kept the pressure on,” Bakich added. “Every single player in the lineup was on base at least twice. Cam, three hits, two doubles, on base five times. Collin Priest with five RBI. Jack Crighton with four hits, three doubles and a triple. Just some awesome contributions today. Everybody contributed up and down the lineup.”

Coming into the series, Clemson had dropped six of its last seven games on the road after winning seven of its first eight. With the ACC Tournament coming up next, now was the time for the Tigers to re-establish that road warrior type of mentality.

“Winning on the road is hard and sweeping on the road is even harder,” Bakich said. “To come out and just play the way we played, responding to three weeks of some adversity, I couldn’t be more proud of these dudes. Everything is feeling good right now.”

The Tigers are the No. 5 seed in the upcoming ACC Tournament and will play the winner of the Stanford-Virginia Tech game on Wednesday at 1 p.m.
