Davion Jones made plans to work out at just one camp this summer, and it was at Clemson.
Safeties coach Mickey Conn has been impressed by Jones’ film and invited him to Dabo Swinney’s high school camp which was held last week. The four-star safety felt pretty confident that if he went out and performed during the workout, an offer was likely to follow. A few days later, that offer was dispensed.
“Once I knew that coach wanted to get me down there and work out with me, I kind of knew it was coming,” Jones told The Clemson Insider. “It was just a matter of time.”
While Jones will make some stops with his 7v7 squad, the blue-chip talent isn’t planning to do any more school camps this summer. He is quickly approaching the two dozen offer mark, with schools like Florida State, Georgia Tech, Michigan, Ohio State, SMU, Tennessee, Wisconsin and South Carolina all having pulled the trigger.
However, knowing how selective Clemson is when it comes to handing out offers, the one from the Tigers hit a little differently.
“Just thankful for the opportunity,” Jones said. “It shows that all the work I put in, it didn’t go to waste or nothing. I’m kind of patting myself on the back about that one.”
Despite the fact that is was a fairly hot afternoon, Jones feels like he put in some really good work in front of Conn.
“He said I looked good, besides me being really tired. It was like 100 degrees out there,” Jones added with a chuckle. “He likes my film, how versatile I am. How I can cover the field sideline to sideline.”
Jones also got a pretty good look at defensive coordinator Tom Allen and his coaching style.
“I hear nothing but great things,” Jones said. “From what I saw of him out there coaching, he’s a really good coach, and he wants what’s best for the players.”
Florida State, Wisconsin, Tennessee and South Carolina are the other schools Jones said he is hearing from the most at the moment, but the 6-foot defensive back noted there was something about Clemson that sets it apart from some of those other programs.
“They are about their business,” Jones said. “I can say they are really about their business there and they’re not wasting any time.”
Jones hasn’t given a whole lot of thought regarding a timeline for having a decision made, but he would like to have one before the start of his senior season. Until then, he plans to keep enjoying the process as he continues his search for the right fit.
“I’m looking for the player development,” Jones said. “Also, how stable the coaching is. I want to major in communication broadcasting, so how good that program is at the school.”
