MLB Draft Could Impact Clemson Roster

Erik Bakich is likely keeping a close eye on the MLB Draft Combine this week.

The event began on Tuesday in Phoenix, with four players tied to Clemson scheduled to take part.

One of those players is Cam Cannarella. It has been a foregone conclusion that Cannarella wrapped up his Clemson career when the Tigers were bounced from the Clemson regional by Kentucky. Cannarella is projected to be a Top 40 pick by most publications. However, what happens with the other three could impact what Bakich’s roster looks like in 2025.

Newly committed transfer, Ryan Wideman, is taking part in the Combine this week. The first-team All-American committed to the Tigers just over a week ago after lighting it up for Western Kentucky last season. Wideman is ranked No. 155 by MLB.com and projected to go in the first five rounds. There’s a very real possibility he never makes it to campus.

Incoming freshman Dax Kilby is another player at the Combine this week. One of the cornerstones of Bakich’s incoming class, MLB.com ranks the left-handed hitting Kilby No. 79 overall, calling him one of the “more polished high school bats available.” One of the top SS prospects in the country, he is another one who may never make it to campus. Perfect Game gives Kilby a grade of 10.

One more incoming freshman is also scheduled to take part in this week’s Combine, with LHP Nick Frusco set to be on hand. Frusco is not ranked at MLB.com. The 6-foot-5, 210-pound hurler is already throwing in the mid-90s coming out of high school.

The MLB Draft is set to be held July 13-14 in Atlanta.
